Wool Rug Cleaning: What to Do — and What Never to Do

A good wool rug can last for decades. Wool is naturally resilient and hides dirt well, but it's also sensitive in ways synthetic rugs aren't. The wrong cleaner, too much heat or too much water can cause shrinkage, color bleeding or a rough, damaged feel.

Everyday care

  • Vacuum regularly, using suction only or a high brush setting. Aggressive beater bars can pull fibers.
  • Expect some shedding on newer wool rugs — it's normal and slows down over time.
  • Rotate the rug every few months to even out wear and sun fading.
  • Use a rug pad to reduce wear and keep the rug from shifting.

Spills: blot fast, use mild products

  1. Blot immediately with a white cloth.
  2. Blot with cool water.
  3. If needed, use a small amount of a wool-safe, mild detergent solution — test in a hidden spot first.
  4. Rinse by blotting with plain water and press dry with towels.
  5. Let it dry fully with airflow before walking on it.

What never to do

  • No bleach or oxygen bleach. Many common stain removers and laundry boosters are alkaline or contain bleaching agents that damage wool fibers and strip color.
  • No hot water or heat on spills. Heat can set stains and shrink wool.
  • Don't soak it. Wool holds a lot of water; a soaked rug dries slowly and colors can run.
  • Don't scrub. Rubbing wool can fuzz and felt the fibers.

Watch for color bleeding

Some rugs, especially those with bright reds and blues, have dyes that can run. If color transfers to a white cloth when you blot, stop and leave it to a professional.

Professional cleaning

A wool rug benefits from a professional clean every one to two years in most homes — more often with pets. A careful cleaner checks the fiber and dyes before choosing a method and controls moisture so the rug dries properly. Our area rug cleaning is $50–$100 per rug depending on size and condition, and we can clean rugs in place, even over hardwood. See area rug cleaning or our stain removal guide.
