What Is Hot Water Extraction? How Truck-Mounted Carpet Cleaning Works
2 min read

Hot water extraction — often called "steam cleaning" — is the method most carpet manufacturers recommend for deep cleaning. Here's what actually happens during a professional cleaning, step by step.
1. Walk-through
A good cleaning starts with a look at the carpet: the fiber type, high-traffic areas, stains and any pet spots. This is when you point out problem areas.
2. Dry soil removal
Most of the dirt in carpet is dry soil — sand and grit. Removing it first matters, because dry soil turns to mud when it gets wet.
3. Pre-treatment and agitation
A pre-treatment solution is applied to loosen oily soil and spots, then worked into the fibers so it reaches the dirt instead of sitting on top. Traffic lanes and stains get extra attention.
4. Hot water rinse and extraction
A cleaning wand sprays heated water into the carpet under pressure and immediately vacuums it back out, carrying the loosened soil and pre-treatment with it. This rinse is the big difference from shampooing: the goal is to leave nothing behind.
5. Deodorizing and drying
Deodorizer leaves the carpet smelling clean, and air movers speed up drying. Most carpets are dry in 6–10 hours.
Why truck-mounted equipment matters
Portable machines are carried into the house and plugged into your outlets. A truck mount stays in the van and runs hoses into your home. That gives it two big advantages:
- Consistent heat. Hot water breaks down oily soil better.
- Much stronger suction. More water and dirt come back out, so carpet dries faster and doesn't stay soggy.
We use a Butler truck mount — one of the best on the market — and it carries its own treated water, so we never use your hose or your water. As one customer put it, the "suction for removing excess water was great."
Is it safe for my carpet?
Yes, when it's done correctly. The right solution, temperature and amount of water depend on the fiber, which is why training matters. Wool and delicate rugs get a gentler approach.
