How to Clean a Microfiber Couch: Do's and Don'ts
2 min read

Microfiber couches are popular with families and pet owners for good reason: they're durable, soft and resist pet claws better than many fabrics. But they have a quirk — the wrong cleaner can leave water marks and stiff, blotchy patches. Here's how to clean one the right way.
Check the tag first
Look for the cleaning code under the cushions:
- S — solvent-based cleaning only. Many microfiber couches are S-coded; water can leave rings.
- W or W/S — water-based cleaning is OK (W/S allows either).
- X — vacuum only; leave cleaning to a professional.
Do: vacuum and brush first
Vacuum with the upholstery tool, including the seams and under the cushions. Then brush the fabric with a soft brush to lift pet hair and loosen dried-on dirt.
Do: spot clean with the right product
For S-coded microfiber, a common approach is rubbing alcohol: test in a hidden spot, lightly mist the stain, and gently scrub with a white sponge. The alcohol evaporates quickly, which helps prevent water marks. Work in a ventilated room and keep it away from open flames.
For W-coded microfiber, use a small amount of mild detergent solution on a white cloth, blot, then blot with plain water.
Do: restore the nap
Once the area is dry, brush it in a circular motion with a soft brush. This fluffs the fibers back up and evens out the texture.
Don't
- Soak the fabric — that's what causes rings and stiff spots.
- Use colored sponges or cloths, which can transfer dye.
- Scrub hard — it can crush the fibers.
- Machine-wash cushion covers unless the tag says you can.
When the whole couch needs help
If the arms and headrests have darkened, there are pet accidents, or spot cleaning has left blotches, a professional clean evens everything out. We check the fabric before choosing a method, then deep-clean and extract so the couch dries evenly. One customer with "6 dogs who love to lick our microfiber couch" had theirs cleaned along with two area rugs.
