How to Clean a Fabric Couch Without Ruining It

Couches take a beating: spills, pets, kids, and the body oils that slowly darken arms and headrests. The good news is most fabric couches can be cleaned at home between professional cleanings. The bad news is the wrong method can leave water rings, faded patches or shrunken cushion covers. Start here.

Step 1: Find the cleaning code

Look for a tag under the cushions or on the frame. Most upholstered furniture has a cleaning code:

  • W — water-based cleaners are OK.
  • S — solvent-based cleaners only; water can leave rings or damage the fabric.
  • W/S — either water-based or solvent cleaners.
  • X — vacuum only. Leave anything more to a professional.

No tag? Treat it as delicate and test anything in a hidden spot first.

Step 2: Vacuum thoroughly

Use the upholstery and crevice tools. Remove cushions and get into the seams, where crumbs, pet hair and grit collect. Dry soil turns to mud when it gets wet, so this step matters.

Step 3: Spot clean (W or W/S fabric)

  1. Mix about ¼ teaspoon of clear, non-bleach dish liquid in a cup of lukewarm water.
  2. Test on a hidden area and let it dry.
  3. Dampen a white cloth — don't soak the fabric — and blot from the outside of the spot toward the center.
  4. Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened in plain water, then press with a dry towel.
  5. Let it dry with good airflow. A fan helps prevent rings.

Mistakes that ruin couches

  • Over-wetting. Water soaks into the foam, takes forever to dry and can leave rings or a musty smell.
  • Scrubbing. It frays fibers and spreads stains.
  • Machine-washing cushion covers because they have zippers. Zippers are often there for manufacturing, not washing — covers can shrink or fade and never fit again.
  • Using colored cloths or harsh cleaners that transfer dye or strip color.

When to call a professional

Large stains, pet accidents, overall dinginess, "S" or "X" fabrics, or a couch you can't afford to experiment on are all good reasons. We check the fabric first, choose the right cleaning method for it, and deep-clean and extract so cushions come back fresh, not soggy.
